Little Ida’s Flowers was Hans Christian Andersen’s first story for children, written in 1835.
Containing a thinly-disguised portrait of himself as a visiting storyteller, ‘Mr Hans’ reply to the question; “Why are my flowers fading?” posed by Ida, his curious companion, comes in the form of a story – a story which sets the imagination of the little girl alight…
Ida’s magical story is sparked into life by THEATRE ROTTO’s master puppeteers using, marionettes, hand puppets, shadow theatre and original live music.
Puppets, script and music are from the team led by Julia Dunbar McLean with additional music from Chris Embury and marionettes by Orlando Bishop. The performance also features Peter Quinnell’s spectacular settings
Little Ida’s Flowers is directed by Samuel Dutton, well known both as actor and puppeteer for his work with the R.S.C., Norwich Puppet Theatre and currently, the Little Angel Theatre.
Following the performance there will be a workshop session (number limited to 30 active participants).
The performance throws up several different themes and our activity sessions will echo the different puppet media used in the performance:
The workshop will involve:
• Working with paper cuts and silhouettes
• Using acetate and shadow puppets to create botanical and moving garden landscape.
The session is suitable for both younger and older participants and children can work alongside family members/carers or friends. A puppet creation will be taken home at the end of the session.
We will be using scissors so children 5 and under should be accompanied.
