Workshop 8: Writing for Comedy
Saturday 31 August
Venue: Upstairs at The Jenny Lind Inn
10.00 to 17.00
Tickets £65, students £55, available below (limited numbers)
Led by John Knowles
John Knowles will lead a day-long workshop exploring comedy writing for the theatre and taking your script from page to stage. The workshop will focus on duologues in particular, and in developing characters as well as looking at some rules (yes, there are some) and simple joke-writing techniques. The workshop will include plenty of hands-on exercises and an opportunity to have your work read by two professional actors. The Workshop is suitable for writers aged 18+ at all stages of their scriptwriting journey.
The day will be split into two key areas:
Morning session: 10.00am-12.45pm
Duologues, development, voice and character.
The workshop will explore the challenges of writing duologues, finding your character’s voices (mining your characters and taking a view). We’ll be looking at character outlines and backstories.
Break for Lunch 12.45pm – 1.45pm
Afternoon session: 1.45 pm – 4.30pm
The afternoon session will be focused around actual writing and creating comedy scenes which will be read/performed at the end of the session. We will also be looking at techniques for joke writing (if you want a gag fest) and a quick look at some sitcom rules.
Places are limited to 12 participants so early booking is recommended.
We regret that this venue does not have disabled access. Nearest parking (pay & display) is The Bourne car park and there is more space at Rock-a-Nore car park on the Stade (10-15 minutes’ walk).
